Abstract
Longitudinal and ring contractions of the small intestine have been investigated experimentally and analytically. Main results of research work are summarized. Models - both mathematical and physical - have been developed to investigate and describe the flow induced by the complex wall motion of the small intestine. A stochastic description of the intestinal motility has been developed and applied to predict flow. The present status of pertinent knowledge on intestinal motility is reviewed. A summary review of all papers available on all kinds of peristaltic flow is also included. Areas in need of research are critically considered.
