Thermal Stress as a Narrow-Band Random Load

Abstract

The stresses in a large diameter concrete cylinder encased in a steel shell and subjected to random surface temperatures are analyzed. A plane strain elastic solution coupled with random process theory is used to determine the mean and variance of thermal stresses as well as the response to a sinusoidal input temperature in the interior of the cylinder. It is shown that stress components may be out of phase at various depths and that significant variable stresses may be produced.
