Concrete Failure Related to Constituent Properties

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 102, Issue 3

Abstract

A failure criterion for common grades of concrete is proposed on the basis of a critical value of the irrecoverable work associated with internal crack formation. An expression is given for the critical value with explicit dependence on aggregate size and implicit dependence on volume and shape of aggregate, as well as bond characteristics. An empirical relationship is then used to write the failure criterion in terms of ultimate stress with explicit dependence on size and volume of aggregate.
