Dynamic Response of Membranes with Finite Elements

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 102, Issue 3

Abstract

A general set of finite element equations that characterize the finite deformation nonlinear dynamic response of structural membranes is formulated. A cubic isoparametric quadrilateral finite element is used to define the membrane surface. Material characterization is kept general in that stress as a function of deformation gradient is calculated at each time step. An example problem showing the linear and nonlinear vibration of a square membrane is provided.
