Abstract
In this note, the use of finite elements to predict the bifurcation buckling loads of pressure-loaded shells is considered. To show the effectiveness of the presented element in the stability analysis of pressure-loaded shells of revolution, three typical problems have been worked out and the results are compared with known analytical solutions. The numerical examples considered show that the critical loads of pressure-loaded shells obtained using rigorous prebuckling analysis are higher than the critical loads obtained using membrane prebuckling analysis for short shells.
