Post-Buckling Behavior of Determinate Beams

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 100, Issue 2

Abstract

A rigorous and uncomplicated theory for the large elastic deformations of beams is presented, and the theory is verified experimentally by investigating the post-buckling behavior of I-section and narrow rectangular section beams. The post-buckling strength of determinate beams is found to be small until the deformations become gross. The results give a more complete understanding of buckling and post-buckling in determinate beams, and the theory provides a basis for the investigation of the post-buckling behavior of redundant beams.
