Galloping Oscillations of Hysteretic Structures
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 99, Issue 6
Abstract
The nature of the aerodynamic galloping oscillation of a hysteretic system is examined using approximate analytic and numerical techniques. It is shown that the hysteretic nonlinearity can have a marked effect on the amplitude and stability of the response. The presence of hysteretic damping of the type considered does not affect the value of the critical flow velocity at which the equilibrium position becomes unstable for certain linear systems. However, the hysteretic damping generally causes the system response to become unbounded above some finite flow velocity.
