Abstract

Some unusual instability effects are shown to occur in beams subjected to a tangential follower force within the span. Depending on the support and load placement conditions either no flutter occurs at all, or the flutter stability boundaries are determined by a series of progressively higher order flutter modes. The behavior of a demonstration model which approximates the system is in essential agreement with the theory.
