Thick Shell and Oriented Surface Theories

Abstract

Equations of equilibrium and kinematic variables of a thick shell theory based on a power series expansion of the displacement field are compared with corresponding equations and variables of an oriented surface theory. The comparison indicates a possible physical interpretation in the light of thick shell theory for some of the kinematic and static quantities of Cosserat surface theory. Approximations of the energy potentials for the two theories are used to evaluate all coefficients of linear elastic oriented surfaces.
