Upper Bounds in Complementary Energy Method

Abstract
Conditions are presented under which the complementary energy method for buckling would lead to predictable upper bounds to exact lowest critical loads. It is shown that such bounds, although defined in some column buckling problems (and implicitly in other one-dimensional systems), do not generally exist in higher-dimensional problems. Also shown is the fact that the complementary energy method for buckling, which is basically a stationarity principle, becomes a maximum principle when it leads to upper bounds.
