Cylindrical Shell under Sudden Pressurization

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 96, Issue 6

Abstract

Under rigid pressurization an elastic cylindrical shell in plane strain responds with a circular membrane mode. Depending upon pressure intensity, shell geometry and dissipation, this may be unstable resulting in the excitation of large amplitude flexure. For inextensional flexural action, the coupling responsible for this parametric resonance is inertial. A method is presented for the identification of unstable modes. Examples illustrate typical long-term (nonlinear) response including the effects of damping. It is also shown that if flexural motion is excited, the resulting stresses are substantially greater than the initial membrane stress.
