Extensibility of Concrete and Theorems of Limit Analysis

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 96, Issue 3

Abstract

The implications of assuming concrete or rock to be a perfectly plastic body when determining the bearing capacity of concrete blocks or rock are examined experimentally. The strain field is experimentally determined for the indentation of a circular punch on a circular block having various block base conditions. Limit analysis is then applied to obtain upper and lower bound solutions for the standardized indirect tensile test for concrete specimens of various shapes. The predicted results are found to be in good agreement with the existing results derived from elasticity theory.
