Response of Slender Columns to Rapid Compression
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 95, Issue 1
Abstract
The dynamic bending and torsional response of slender columns with low torsional rigidity subjected to a varying load which is defined by moving the ends of the column together at a constant relative velocity is discussed. The coupled bending and torsion equations for slender columns which are not straight in the initial unstressed state are developed. The set of partial differential equations are uncoupled and the resulting set of ordinary differential equations are solved numerically. Typical solutions are presented which show the three dimensional response of a doubly symmetric column, and the torsional response is found to relate strongly to the initial twist in the column. Typical solutions are also given for a column with one axis of symmetry, in which the torsional response is found to relate strongly to the relative bending stiffness, relative torsional stiffness, and the shear center distance. The importance of considering a three dimensional analysis is shown to be valid for columns with low torsional stiffness.
