Abstract
Using membrane and bending theories of thin elastic shells, analyses of the early stages of water hammer are presented. Some of the restrictions of the elementary one-dimensional theory are relaxed so that the effects of radial components of acceleration of the fluid and of the shell can be assessed. A finite Hankel transform is employed to generate partial differential equations which are integrated numerically by the method of characteristics.
