Abstract
A space-framework model is derived to represent a rectangular, prismatic, solid element which is assumed to be in a state of uniform stress and which has any value of Poisson's ratio. The model consists of edge beams having both axial and flexural rigidity and also diagonal members in each external face which have axial rigidity only. An equivalent space-framework can therefore be established to simulate the behavior of an elastic, three dimensional continuum under applied load or deformation, or both. The method is applied to two examples to determine the dependence of the accuracy of the idealization on mesh size and also to compare the accuracy of solution with that obtained by a conventional finite-element approach.
