Abstract

A solution of the problem of nonregular progression of the stress profile in the analysis of load-deformation relationship of long circular cylindrical shells made of isotropic linear strain hardening material is presented. The shells are assumed to be simply supported at both ends, with zero end load and subjected to a uniform internal pressure. The exact Tresca yield criterion is approximated by means of a hexagonal yield surface of slope 1/128 in the stress space. The comparison of the stress profiles and the displacements with those obtained by using a circumscribing square yield criterion shows a remarkable difference between the two results.
