Abstract

The problem of lateral-torsional buckling in beam columns is studied using an analytical approach to detect the stage at which the inception of this type of instability is imminent. The method adopted uses a forward integration scheme for solving the differential equations defining the problem. Typical results are presented in respect of an 8W31 and a 10WF89, as these have cross sections representative of thin-walled and moderately thin-walled columns, commonly used in multistory buildings. Results obtained in respect of a 14WF287, which is a thick-walled section, were found to be qualitatively similar to those in respect of a 10WF89.
