Abstract
Two analog methods of simulating earthquake motions are presented. One method uses sections of a gaussian random function with a given power spectrum. The second method uses a hybrid computer that permits any given type of ground motion to be simulated. Linear single-degree-of-freedom systems were excited by the simulated earthquakes and their responses were measured. Base shear was used as a measure of the response and empirical formulas were developed for base shear as a function of the mass and period of the system and the magnitude of the ground acceleration.
