Abstract
An example is presented to demonstrate a particular error that may be encountered when calculating deflections of partially collapsed frames with the usual limit analysis approach. Normally, it is tacitly assumed that the locations of all plastic hinges are the same for the elastic plastic model as they are for the rigid plastic collapse model. A specific example is presented to demonstrate that this assumption is not always valid. Its validity can be assured, however, if the moment distribution for the elastic plastic model is verified as being statically admissible. Should this not be the case, plastic hinges should be assumed to occur at those sections where the yield moment is exceeded, and static admissibility checked. As is true in the usual form of the displacement theorem, maximum possible displacements will be associated with the true collapse displacements.
