Grain Size and Loading Rate Effects on Steel

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 90, Issue 5

Abstract

The yield strength of a low carbon steel is determined as a function of grain size and loading rate. Theoretical expressions, based on a dislocation model, are developed to predict the yield strength, taking these two variables into consideration. An experiment program involving variation in grain size and rate of loading was conducted to evaluate parameters and check the validity of the theoretical expressions. The proposed theory is found to be effective in predicting yield stress values for a low carbon steel treated to produce various grain sizes and subjected to loading rates varying from 484 psi per sec to 8 x 108 psi per sec.
