Abstract
Problems involving stress wave propagation in higher dimensional solids are extremely complex from an analytical standpoint. A numerical approach to these problems in axially symmetrical solids is proposed that involves the use of a lumped-parameter physical model. The model is shown to be mathematically consistent, in a central finite difference context, with the classical theory of axially symmetric solid continua. A number of numerical problems that are associated with the prediction of elastic earth motions resulting from blast loadings are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach.
