Natural Vibrations of Partially Clamped Plates

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 89, Issue 3

Abstract

Free vibration of a simply supported rectangular plate with some sectionally clamped portions along the edges was analyzed by relaxing the initial condition of clamping. This was accomplished by introducing a resisting moment, bringing about a slope displacement opposite in sense to that developed in the clamped sections at the edges of the plate. Two numerical examples showed good convergence. Experiments verified the theoretical results, that the fundamental vibrations of a partially clamped plate have characteristics intermediate between those of a plate simply supported on all edges and a plate clamped on all edges. The experiments were performed to cover some higher mode of vibration.
