Abstract

Simple model is used to illustrate effects of modes of initial imperfections on stability of elastic and inelastic systems; in case of linear elastic systems, modes of imperfections have distinct effects on load-deformation relationships, but not on buckling loads and final modes of buckling; however, because most actual systems are geometrically or physically nonlinear, modes, as well as amplitudes, of imperfections have pronounced effects on buckling loads, modes of buckling, and load-deformation relationships.
