Abstract

In areas where a scarcity of granular materials meeting subbase specifications exists, cement-treated subbases often provide an economical solution. Besides preventing erosion caused by pumping, cement-treated subbase can use inexpensive substandard granular materials; provide a stable, water-resistant working table for the contractor; permit the use of thinner concrete slabs; and result to improved pavement performance. The history and development of cement-treated subbases, now used in 31 states and provinces, is presented. Included are details concerning suggested criteria for granular materials and cement requirements; the design and performance of experimental projects; structural properties, including resistance to densification, k-values and load-transfer characteristics; construction methods used for fine-grading; and the performance of projects to service.
