Abstract
Although all of the equations required for the hydraulic design of culverts are well-known, the determination of which equation applies to a particular situation is difficult to determine. Twenty-two sub-items are listed for consideration by the designer as he determines the hydraulic performance of culverts. The degree of competence required for this determination is such that only well-trained and competent engineers should be entrusted with it. Examples illustrate the philosophies of designing culverts for a unique or single head-discharge relationship and for a non-unique or multiple and timewise indeterminate head-discharge relationship.
