Abstract

An empirical equation is developed to facilitate the use of existing circular curve templates for plotting vertical curves. The basic derived equation is adjusted to reflect the scales used in plotting roadway profiles. The practical use of this method is not limited by the K values (L/A) recommended by AASHO for the highest design speed; it is limited only by the largest available template. After the engineer or draftsman familiarizes himself with the use of this method, he will acquire efficiency, as well as confidence, in determining the size of the needed circular templates. The use of existing circular templates is most advantageous in plotting long and flat vertical curves in contract drawings, although use is not limited to this case.
