Abstract

A description of the layout of vertical curves corresponding to highway design criteria is presented for the purpose of incorporating the results into a drafting template. The basic equation for a parabola is adjusted to reflect the scales of the drawing layout, the rate of curvature is adjusted for sag, and summit vertical curves are adjusted for increments of vehicle speed from 30 mph to 70 mph, using values recommended by the AASHO. By use of a template with the correct vertical curve preplotted, both speed and accuracy are gained in the design and drafting of vertical curves for preliminary and contract drawings.
