Abstract
Using a dynamic mathematical model, it is shown that the partial operation cost of an activated sludge plant can vary as much as several thousand dollars per week depending upon mean cell retention time. It is shown that the least cost operating strategy will depend on sludge disposal cost, oxygen transfer cost, and digester gas value. Of key importance is operation flexibility which can allow treatment system operation at various mean cell retention times. Digester gas value can be a significant factor in determining least cost operating strategy.
