Abstract
This paper presents a compendium of design parameters and guidelines that are useful to the professional designer. All variations of the activated sludge process for the treatment of municipal wastes are described and compared. Advantages and disadvantages are given for each variation. Performance data for plants in the eastern part of the United States are presented. Inhibitory effects of toxic and metallic pollutants are described, Nutrient requirements of aerobic processes are quantified, and the effects of toxic and shock loads are discussed.
