Abstract

A two-dimensional model describing dispersion process has been developed. The final form of the model is made relatively easy to use by introducing a Taylor series expansion and an asymptotic expansion during the mathematical development. These two approximations allow integrals appearing in the describing equations to be written in closed form. Three applications of the model are given: prediction of concentration profiles arising from vinyl chloride dispersing from a chemical plant; prediction of the extent of groundwater pollution caused by underground coal gasification; and the evaluation of a deep-well disposal facility at an industrial site. The model is compared with results of a laboratory dispersion study and is found to be a good representation of reality.
