Pulsating Bed Activated Carbon Dechlorination

Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 6

Abstract

A mathematical model describing the unsteady-state behavior of a pulsating bed activated carbon dechlorinator is developed and tested. Very close agreement for time related effluent free chlorine concentration is demonstrated between experimental results and model predictions. The free chlorine-carbon local reaction rate is described by a generalized algebraic rate expression. This rate expression is correlated as a function of bulk chlorine concentration, extent of reaction, carbon granule size, pH, temperature and pore volume. Design nomograms are developed as an aid for the sizing of such contactors.
