Abstract

A mathematical model is formulated for two-dimensional transient mixing in natural river channels using an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Analytical solutions are obtained for predicting concentration distributions due to a time-dependent line source of variable strength. Special cases of practical interest are examined. Analytical solutions are generally in integral or series form which can be efficiently evaluated with existing numerical quadratures. Examples are given to depict the pattern of concentration distribution and the effects of various parameters.
