Site Specific Burial of Unfixated Flue Gas Sludge
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 103, Issue 6
Abstract
Detailed studies of unfixated Flue Gas Desulfurization Sludge are presented together with the prevailing edaphic conditions of a proposed site. Considering the geological-stratigraphic characteristics of the site and the pedological values of the soils, it was concluded that about 0.028% of the leachates will reach the closest aquifer through lateral migration. This quantity is insignificant relative to the present ground-water quality which exceeds Public Health Standards for Drinking Water. Ion exchange capacity calculations of fine clays underlying the burial site provide 10 yr saturation of these strata would occur, not considering its natural regenerative capacity. Economic comparisons indicate the cost effectiveness of burying unfixated sludge material. Thorough investigations of the burial site should be carried out since the FGD sludge could be feasibly buried without fixation.
