Abstract
Single, dual, and multimedia filters commonly used for wastewater treatment have a number of operational limitations associated with the stratification of the filter bed during backwash and the restricted grain size combinations that can be used satisfactorily. The use of single-medium filters with air and water applied simultaneously throughout much of the backwash operation eliminates most of these operational limitations. Backwash water rates are reduced, and the filter bed remains cleaner after backwash. Larger media sizes can be used, thereby permitting longer filter runs. The use of combined air-water wash greatly simplifies the backwash operation, and the desired effluent quality can be obtained by appropriately sizing the filter medium.
