Nitrifying Organism Concentration and Activity
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 102, Issue 2
Abstract
A technique for estimating the concentration and activity of nitrifying microorganisms was developed. The oxidation rates of the nitrifying organisms were not affected by substrate concentration and followed zero-order kinetics. The rates were influenced by pH and the pH optima were in the range of 7.4-7.9. The concentration of nitrifying organisms influenced the oxidation rates. The steps to be followed in using the technique are presented. The technique appears to have promise as an aid for better design and operation of nitrifying processes.
