Abstract
The residue remaining after incineration of municipal solid wastes can be processed for recycling as a substitute for mineral aggregates in asphalt pavements. Limited reclamation of ferrous metals in incinerator residues has been practiced by some municipalities. Laboratory and field tests in Baltimore indicate the possibility of utilizing most of the remaining residue, after treatment, in asphalt pavements. Residues from several incinerators in different parts of the United States are tested. Residue from a 40-yr old batch type incinerator is successfully substituted for mineral aggregate in varying percentages up to l00%. Abrasion tests indicate residues from modern incinerators may be suitable for asphalt surface or wearing courses. The economics of recycling ferrous metals and treated residue are examined.
