Abstract
The problems encountered in the development of models for the quantification of the degree of hazard to the environment of waste streams are examined. With the aid of a numerical example, an additive utility approach is elucidated in detail. Three recently proposed hazardous waste rating models are also critically reviewed. In general, the complexities involved and the assumptions implied in the selection and implementation of such models are not recognized. Further, when applied to a sample of hazardous materials, there is inadequate agreement among these rating models.
