Scale-Up of Solid Bowl Centrifuge Performance
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 100, Issue 2
Abstract
Present practice in scale-up of centrifuges is based on the hydraulic loading, referred to as the Sigma Method. As long as machine performance is indeed limited by hydraulic loading, the procedure has considerable merit. It is possible, however, for centrifuges to be limited by solids throughout. In such cases, the Sigma method can lead to significant design errors. A method for scaling-up based on solids loading is presented in this paper and performance data are used to illustrate the applicability of the Beta Method. It is emphasized that both the Sigma and Beta must be used for scale-up, and that one of the two will govern performance.
