Abstract
A stochastic analysis of orthokinetic flocculation has been employed to illustrate one method of computing overdesign factors for continuous flow flocculators. Random inputs and coefficients with known probability distributions were introduced into a model of primary particle flocculation to carry out Monte Carlo simulations. The resulting stochastic outputs were characterized and related to the inputs. It was discovered that both the unsteady-state and steady-state sample responses could be regarded as being normally distributed and essentially unbiased, greatly simplifying the computation of the overdesign factor. Although stochastic analysis cannot reduce the uncertainty involved in flocculation design, it can assist in making design decisions on more quantitative basis.
