Abstract
This is a summary and discussion of the recommendations which were presented at the Third National Conference on Environmental Engineering Education held at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Penna., in August 1971. Reports and proposed recommendations were originally developed by seven committees in preparation for the Conference. The proposed recommendations were discussed and modified and some were adopted at the Conference. The recommendations are concerned with the identity of, the manpower needs for, and educational programs for environmental engineering. A large number of civil engineers and some engineers with other educational backgrounds have identified with environmental engineering as a field of practice. The field is broad because it is concerned both with protecting human populations from environmental hazards and protecting environments from the effects of human activities.
