Seismic Design Criteria for Fossil Plant Structures

Publication: Journal of the Energy Division
Volume 107, Issue 2

Abstract

Applied Technology Council recommendations are used to develop seismic design criteria for fossil fuel plants which, in general, satisfy the intent of the Uniform Building Code. Unique features of fossil fuel plants and the rationale used in developing the seismic design criterion based on dynamic analysis are highlighted. The use of the criterion is illustrated for typical fossil plant structures. Fundamental periods of these structures are compared with the fundamental periods obtained from the formulas given in the existing codes. The comparison shows the discrepancies in the code formulas as they are applied to this type of structure.
