Strength Characteristics of Bauxite Pozzolana Concrete

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 104, Issue 1

Abstract

Bauxite is currently mined in Ghana on a commercial basis. Beneficiation of the ore is undertaken before it is exported and during the beneficiation process significant amount of the ore estimated at between 20% and 25% are washed away as red mud. The red mud is dumped into large ponds where it is left to dry. With the planned processing of bauxite into alumina, the amount of waste currently estimated at 300 tons/day, is bound to increase. Finding a means of converting this waste into a useful product will not only by desirable but also beneficial and this work was initiated with these objectives in mind.
