Abstract
The paper presents results from observations of 69 residences and their foundation slabs which were razed for a highway expansion. All houses were constructed in accordance with FHA standards and varied in age from 5 yr to 15 yrs at the time of demolition. Over 60% of the structures had interior damage due to foundation movements. Ninety percent of the slabs had movement cracks. Differential slab movements correlated to superstructure distress. Concrete and construction quality, within the limits investigated, did not appear related to movements or superstructure behavior.
