Economic Analysis for Accelerated Construction

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 103, Issue 2

Abstract

The potential economic benefits of accelerating off-season construction activity are reviewed. The advantages of investigating individual projects via a construction sequence model which traces the time-cost of finance is presented. Recognized costs and benefits of increased off-season effort and shorter project completion times are identified and methods of quantifying them are considered. A means of incorporating these data with the normal project costs are shown and an analytical format using a computerized version of the Gantt bar chart and markup analysis is developed for decision-making purposes. The method permits multiple alternatives to be investigated and the potential benefits in terms of increased profit for general contractor are identifiable outputs. An example project illustrates the method.
