Abstract
Recent operations in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Lake Maracaibo, Santa Barbara Channel, Alaska, Canadian Archipelago, and North Sea are presented with evaluation of problems, difficulties, the complex means of overcoming them, costs, and financing. Reference is made to the Texas Towers for radar protection planted in the North Atlantic in the l950's. Innovations to counter ice problems in Alaskan and Arctic Ocean waters, and to combat the particularly deep and stormy waters of the North Sea, are explained in detail. Exploratory drilling facilities; permanent production structures in both steel and concrete, with a detailed account of the rapidly developing prestressed concrete gravity platforms are covered. Concludes with a presentation of buried pipelines to carry products to markets, and of the new extremely heavy and expensive equipment required.
