Earthquake Research Applied to Slope Stability

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 99, Issue 1

Abstract

Recent earthquake research indicates that traditional slope stability analyses do not even approximate actual earthquake action. New and improved analytical and testing techniques now make it possible to approach earthquake action analyses on a rational basis. These techniques must be used to minimize the probability of slope failures and to minimize the effect of failures that cannot be precluded. The progress made must be used even though absolute results cannot yet be guaranteed—earthquake analyses and engineering is still an art and not yet a fully developed science but progress has been made.
