Abstract
Fabrication for the world's longest suspension bridge required expedited efforts of mills and fabricating shops and covered a wide range of materials. Towers, stiffening trusses, and floor trusses were preassembled in the shops. Cable anchor bars were tested full size to destruction. Towers were erected by creeper derrick. Cable spinning, compaction, and wrapping was accomplished by conventional but greatly improved methods. The suspended structure was erected in three stages. The major framework was preassembled at the ground storage yard and floated to the site on barges. It was lifted into position from the cables in 100-ft sections. Stringers, grid flooring, and parapets were lifted from barges by derricks and erected by truck cranes. Concreting of the roadway was performed in a skip pattern. The bridge is painted with basic lead silico chromate paint. Construction was completed in 4 yr and 10-1/2 months. Strict safety requirements reduced accidents.
