Verrazano-Narrow Bridge: Development and Financing of Project
Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 92, Issue 2
Abstract
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge across the Narrows at the entrance to New York Harbor was built by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. It is a key link in the southerly bypass route developed to keep through traffic out of the congested core of the city. It has two decks, with six lanes on each. The upper deck will be operated initially and the lower deck put into use when traffic warrants. Estimated traffic for the first year of operation is 12,600,000 vehicles. Ultimate capacity is estimated at 45,000,000 vehicles annually. The bridge was financed by sale of $300,000,000 revenue bonds by the Authority. No city or state tax money or credit is involved. Estimated total cost of the bridge is $305,000,000.
