Abstract
There is a meaningful body of knowledge currently (1964) available that indicates the need for taking the factor of airport accessibility into account when considering either locating a new airport or abandoning an existing one. The importance of this matter, the rationale for and against its acceptance, selections from factual data available and the engineers’ responsibilities are among the primary areas examined. Failure to take the effect of accessibility, or inaccessibility, into account when locating an airport can lead to a chain reaction whereby passenger losses result in depressed airline revenue service, in depressed airport revenues and depressed ability to support airport development expenses. It is the professional responsibility of the engineers involved in airport work to be acquainted with these matters and to see that they are treated on a scientific basis. Failure to do this can lead to the development of airports that only partly serve the market, thereby betraying the initial economic justification for such airports.
