Professional Competence and the River of Knowledge
Publication: Issues in Engineering: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 107, Issue 3
Abstract
The problems involved in maintaining professional competence and in preventing unethical and unprofessional work are examined. The profession attempts to guarantee competence in engineering fundamentals through the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) examinations. No certification program can prevent unethical or unprofessional work, which are ultimately prevented only by individual integrity, i.e., ethical competence. The profession's ethical standards should be part of the undergraduate engineering curriculum. Questions on ethics should be included on the EIT and PE examinations.
